The Legion of Mary is privileged to nominate Deacon Larry Lucido for the Volunteer of the Year. Deacon Larry has been a member of the Legion for over 60 years and the Legion was instrumental in his becoming a Deacon. One of Larry’s first Legion assignments was the jail ministry at the Lew Starrett County Jail. He celebrated the Eucharist at each Saturday morning service and provide Bibles and Rosaries for the inmates. When his wife, Mary, joined the Legion, they took part in a parish survey that showed a large number of families could not provide transportation to religious education for their children. For many years, Larry and Mary provided transportation on Sundays so the children could attend Mass and CCD classes. Present activities: 1. As Spiritual Director of St. Monica English Legion, he prepares and presents the Allocution to the group each week. 2. Alternate leader of Legion Project of Saturday Devotions. 3, Leads Rosaries at Wakes/ Funerals when requested. 4. Contacts and conducts personal visits to the sick and takes Communion to nursing homes and hospitals. 5. Active member of the Pro Life community and has hosted meetings at his home. 6. As a life- long member of the Knights of Columbus, Larry participated in many of their service projects. Mary and Larry have been married for 67 years and have 6 children, 13 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. They have been members of the St. Monica Parish for over 60 years. They were the first couple to give out Communion after Pope John Paul‘s policy change concerning the laity in the liturgy. Deacon Larry became a spokesman at City Hall speaking on behalf of the parishioners of St. Monica., Deacon Larry stated that one of his great blessings was that he was able to baptize 6 of his grandchildren and participate in 2 of his son’s weddings. Coming from a large family, he also assisted in some of his siblings’ funerals. Deacon Larry has modeled what a Christ-loving man should do and be.
